- Offers more than 1700 servers in 70 different locations
- Hide.me offers the best FREE VPN plan in the industry VPN with 10GB / month limit
- Cross-platform VPN access (downloadable applications for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Windows Phone; step-by-step configurations for Linux, routers, consoles and more)

Hide.me's paid tier is called Premium, which costs $ 14.95 per month and is what I've tried here. That's significantly more than the current industry average of $ 10.80 per month. In particular, all of PCMag's top rated VPNs are less expensive than Hide.me. Norton Secure VPN, for example, only costs $ 7.99 a month, and ProtonVPN's multi-tier system means you can get a great full-featured VPN for as little as $ 5.00 a month. Please note that Hide.me, like most other VPN companies, often offers discounts on their subscriptions. You may see a lower price when you visit the site, but $ 14.95 is the listed base price.
The Premium tier removes the data cap from the free tier, grants access to the 57 VPN locations Hide.me offers, and raises the device cap to 10. That's twice the industry average for concurrent connections. Avira Phantom VPN, Surfshark VPN, and Windscribe VPN do not limit the number of devices you can use.
As with most VPN companies, Hide.me offers longer subscriptions at a discount. A one-year plan with Hide.me will cost you $ 59.95, and a two-year plan costs $ 99.95. NordVPN costs just $ 83.88 per year, ProtonVPN Plus tier costs $ 96.00 per year, and TunnelBear's excellent service ($ 4.99 per month at TunnelBear) costs just under $ 59.88 per year. In general, I advise clients to buy short-term plans first, then try the VPN service for a while before committing to a long-term plan. That way, you can be sure that the VPN will work for all the services you use most often.
You can purchase an account on the Hide.me website using all major credit cards, PayPal, and various anonymous crypto options like BitCoin and Ethereum. That is particularly useful if you want a fully experience anonymous when buying a VPN. Some VPN companies, such as TorGuard VPN, allow you to purchase an account with prepaid gift cards from major retailers, such as Subway sandwiches. However, I noticed that the Privacy Badger crawler blocker made the Hide.me purchase page unusable. This is the first time I have encountered this issue in more than two dozen VPN reviews.
The Windows Hide.me app I tested for this review uses OpenVPN, which is a plus in its favor. It also supports the IKEv2 protocol, which is new and secure. The service also provides legacy support for L2TP / IPSec, as well as older SSTP and PPTP protocols. I would advise against using these last two, but they can be useful for legacy support.
Additionally, Hide.me includes support for the SoftEther VPN protocol. It is the first service I know of that uses this particular technology, which the company says is designed to be Hard to detect and block. Other VPNs offer similar features that seek to disguise VPN traffic to bypass VPN blocking. TunnelBear, for example, calls this feature GhostBear. WireGuard is the heir to OpenVPN, which promises unmatched speeds and the latest security. It is still a protocol in development and Hide.me does not currently support WireGuard in its Windows application.
Servers and server locations
The number of servers and the location of servers in a VPN company can have a significant impact on performance. Businesses with just a handful of servers must channel more customers to crowded servers, reducing the portion of bandwidth available to each person. Similarly, if a company only has a few locations for its servers, it may mean connecting to a completely different continent just to connect. For this reason, we pay special attention to the number of servers offered and whether there is a good degree of geographic diversity in the location of those servers.
Hide.me has a reasonably sized server group, with 1,400 servers in 56 different locations in 35 countries. In comparison, NordVPN has more than 5,200 servers and CyberGhost offers more than 5,600 servers. Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN and TorGuard have more than 3,000 servers, respectively. Keep in mind that companies will buy as many servers as necessary to meet demand, so it is not a strict measure of quality.
As for the geographic diversity of Hide.me's servers, the company has done a pretty good job covering Earth. Many VPN companies ignore South America, India, and all of Africa, but Hide.me has some locations in these regions. It also has servers in China and Turkey, regions known for censoring the web. Hide.me does not offer a server in Russia, but NordVPN and others do. ExpressVPN and CyberGhost lead the pack, offering servers in more than 90 countries.
Your privacy with Hide.me
The essence of the policy is that Hide.me collects as little information as possible. In fact, the only information that seems to store over a period of time is the users' email addresses. The policy says, "We do not request or store your name, IP address, or physical addresses or any other personal information."
The company does not monitor what sites you access, does not record your true IP address, or even mark the time of your connection. The company tracks the amount of traffic for users, as two of Hide.me's plans have data limits. It also stores some troubleshooting information, including the "client-generated random username and internally assigned (not public) IP address," but deletes that information every few hours. Hide.me could improve in this area, as other VPN services now strive to gather as little information as possible and keep it as short as possible.
Hands On With Hide.me
There are no problems installing the Hide.me app on my Lenovo ThinkPad T460s laptop running Windows 10. You can choose to forgo the app entirely and manually configure a Windows 10 computer to connect via VPN, but it's a bit difficult.
The Hide.me app is very simple and offers only a blue window with a big button to connect the VPN. I appreciate the apps that get to the point as well. It's much simpler than PureVPN, which has some useful scenario-based connection presets, but it lacks a quick and easy way to connect.
The Hide.me app is simple, but not exactly friendly. I prefer the NordVPN app, which uses maps and large buttons to make even complex tools accessible. TunnelBear does something similar with brightly colored bears.
One quirk I noticed in testing was that when the "Best Location" option was selected, the Hide.me app sometimes connected to a VPN server in the Netherlands. Now, I have nothing against the Netherlands, but most VPNs will connect you to the closest server to your actual location by default. This is because the closer you are to the VPN server, the better performance you will see. It is also disappointing how the client tried and failed multiple times to connect to a US based VPN server. USA I'm amazed that after all the work Hide.me has done to improve its customer, this behavior persists.
While Hide.me makes it obvious which servers BitTorrent allows, it doesn't include server statistics like overhead or ping time. However, it allows you to drill down to see specific servers in the application's location list. That's useful, because you may find that one server works better for you than another. Then you can add that useful server to your Favorites, for easy access later.
However, the Settings panel provides some surprisingly advanced features. Hide.me even lets you activate custom scripts for when the VPN fails, which I've never seen before. An Advanced tab allows you to play with ports and so on, if that's your thing. The client also includes a rare feature called Split Tunneling, which allows you to designate which applications send traffic through the VPN and which do not. This is useful for negotiate difficult scenarios, such as streaming to local media devices or accessing specific services that block VPN traffic.
Hide.me and Netflix
Many video streaming services block the use of VPN because you can use them to spoof your location and access content licensed for specific regions. The BBC's free streaming iPlayer, for example, is intended for UK citizens only. But if you upload to a VPN server in London, you can also be a local resident. In particular, Netflix blocks VPNs very aggressively, as mentioned above.
During my testing, I was unable to access Netflix when connected to a Hide.me home server. Your mileage may vary, but be aware that a VPN service that works with Netflix today might not be tomorrow.
Hide.me on other platforms
Hide.me offers applications for Android, iPhone, macOS and Windows devices. It also provides apps for Amazon Fire devices, which is surprisingly rare. Also, you can choose to install Hide.me proxy plugins for Chrome and Firefox. These change the IP address and apparent location of your browser's traffic, and only your browser's traffic, but they do not use the same means to encrypt their traffic as the normal VPN application.
Alternatively, you can follow Hide.me's instructions on how to run a VPN from your router, or buy a Vilfo router configured to run with Hide.me. While it's an interesting setup, I don't think using a VPN through a router is a viable use case.
