How does a VPN service work?

Using a VPN to ensure the security of your personal data works like this:

Once you connect to the Internet with your VPN service activated, you will connect to one of the VPN provider's servers.

Encryption What does that mean?

Encryption is the process of taking certain information (your data) and encoding it so that it cannot be read. When you connect to the Internet using a VPN, your connection is what is encrypted, which means that if cybercriminals intercepted the flow of your data, all they would get would be a fake code.

You can consider encryption as a form of secret code. The way your data is mixed is called encryption, and there is a key (or logic) that allows you to decrypt the message to make sense again.

The highest encryption standard available is known as the 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and is used by the most recommended VPN providers. What does 256 bit mean? Why are IP addresses important?

Your IP address is a unique set of numbers that identifies your device when you connect to the Internet. Think of it as your home address that generally looks like this: 216.3.128.12. Each device has one, and when you connect to a website, the address you entered to access is translated into the IP address of that website's server. But just as your computer is collecting the IP address of that server to connect to it, so are the servers of each website you connect to to collect the IP address of your device.

Your IP address links your device to your ISP, and also to the region in which it is operating. This is how content restriction by region services work: your IP address marks the region you are in, and if the content you are trying to access is restricted to where you are, then you will not be able to see it.

When you connect to a VPN server, you effectively get the IP address of one of your servers in whatever region that server is in, hiding your IP address behind it in the process. Anyone sniffing around can only find the IP address of their VPN provider. It is not yours.

Combine that with the encrypted Internet connection between your device and the VPN servers, and your browsing habits are deprived of ISPs, hackers, and government surveillance.
